Winsley C. Catanes - February 2005

A man in uniform, Winsley C. Catanes belongs to the Philippine's elite force, the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Although Winsley has only been a policeman for a year and a half now (he started July, 2003), he has made a mark among his colleagues. Whether he is working in the office or out in the field, Winsley shares his expertise with them on how to stay fit and healthy.

Having joined several competitions in bodybuilding and having worked as a gym instructor and personal trainer before joining the rank and file, he advises them to eat the right foods, train with weights properly and get as much rest as possible. This has raised the standard of quality performance among his peers, where physical and mental competence count most.

Winsley entered the force based on his merits and credentials, not because he knew someone at the top. After passing the National Police Commission examination given in 2003, the boot camp training at Teacher's Camp in Baguio City and Aringay, La Union, he was assigned at the Crime Laboratory Unit in Camp Crame, Quezon City. He takes his job seriously, just as much as training for a competition.

Winsley's mentor is his older brother, also a man in uniform with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Actually, he also passed the entrance examination given by the AFP in 2003 but the results of the PNP exam came out first so he took the first opportunity with the PNP. He has had no regrets in doing so. His brother influenced him in going into the military service when he was in high school and college. He was also instrumental in exposing him to bodybuilding and weight training.

Winsley was born and raised in Kapangan, Benguet. He went to high school and college in Baguio City. He played a lot of sports in school and played the drums together with a band. In 1999, he started training with weights at the age of 21 at the Baguio Fitness Horizon Gym. He got the hang of it and went on to compete several amateur shows and won.

He believes his best body parts are his abs and back. He wants to compete on the National level in a couple of years and be part of the Philippine team in bodybuilding. He has high respect for Alfie Cornel, a member of the Philippine Bodybuilding team in the '90s also from Baguio City, because of what he has done for the sport in Baguio City in the last few years and for what he has done for his career and for himself.

Winsley keeps a very healthy lifestyle - no smoking, no drinking policy for himself. This is part of his long term goal to stay healthy and fit. If only more of our young people and even adults emulate him, then our nation can be in the forefront of Health and Fitness.

Pinoymuscle.Com salutes Winsley for being a role model.
